VENOM - The Seven Gates of Hell - Singles 1981-1985 2LP (GALAXY)

Between 1981 and 1985, Venom's classic lineup—Cronos, Mantas, and Abaddon—released seven singles, possibly one for each of the seven gates of hell. It was the band's golden age, and with these releases, along with the two albums "Welcome To Hell" and "Black Metal," they cemented their place in the metal hall of fame. Not only did Venom single-handedly create their own genre, they also became the benchmark for extreme metal and black metal of the future. The importance of the releases represented here cannot be overstated and clearly demonstrates the musical evolution of Venom's sound. Opening with "In League With Satan" from April 1981, "The Seven Gates Of Hell" presents seven singles in chronological order: "Blood Lust," "Die Hard," "Warhead," "Manitou," "Nightmare," and the limited edition "Hell At Hammersmith" EP (featuring a stunning live version of "Witching Hour"). The running order is completed by the respective B-sides. "The Seven Gates Of Hell" was originally released on CD by Sanctuary in 2003. This vinyl edition also includes a live version of "Warhead," found on the back of the picture disc of "Nightmare," as well as a 5,000-word essay based on a new interview with Tony Bray, aka Abaddon. JOHN TUCKER
