NOCTURNAL WITCH - A Thousand Pyres LP (BONE)
Five years after their debut album "Summoning Hell," German duo Nocturnal Witch released "A Thousand Pyres" in 2019, taking the next logical step in their development with more sophisticated arrangements and a broader palette of influences that, mind you, didn't dilute their established stylistic direction. It's fair to call it straightforward blackened thrash metal, even if the Thuringian band might disagree. "Such categorizations are usually made by others," believe singer/guitarist Tyrant and drummer Baphomet. "We don't think in such patterns when it comes to songwriting. We simply make the music we feel like making, which emerges naturally." For "A Thousand Pyres," this meant a more melodic approach (title track, 'Scorn and Wrath') and choruses that were even more memorable than those of the previous album ('Dark Forces'). Drawing on their experience from previous sessions and in other bands, the two musicians created an album without filler material, featuring an authentically raw yet nuanced sound from their own rehearsal space, Black Magic Studios, where they recorded with the mobile equipment of Patrick W. Engel of Temple of Disharmony, who ultimately mixed and mastered the material. Given the quality of "A Thousand Pyres" on all levels, one eagerly awaits what Nocturnal Witch will present on their third album, currently in the works. Until then, enjoy this underground gem!
