HULDER - Godslastering Hymns Of A Forlorn Peasantry CD (Preorder)
NB! Preorder item, release July 17.
HULDER emerged from the underground tape circuit in 2018 and rapidly accumulated a devoted following through successive demo and compilation releases that planted a dark medieval black metal flag with rare conviction.
‘Godslastering: Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry’, the band’s debut full-length originally released in 2021, was the record that confirmed the project's seriousness: eight tracks that expanded the raw discipline of the early tapes into something architecturally fuller, richer in texture, and bracingly realized. The album navigates between two modes without ever losing coherence: there are tracks of stripped, blast-driven intensity where the guitars bite and the atmosphere thickens like frost on stone, and there are passages of acoustic guitar, medieval keyboard, and unhurried melody that give the record a genuine emotional depth without softening its edge. "De Dijle", named after the river running through HULDER's native Mechelen, anchors the album in a specific geography: the Belgian lowlands as source of folklore, darkness, and a sense of ancient continuity that courses through the lyrical fabric. "A Forlorn Peasant's Hymn" is the most arresting structural moment, opening in ethereal clean song before fracturing into corrosive black metal, a contrast that holds because the songwriting earns it rather than simply deploying it for effect.
The production carries the right amount of haze: full enough to let each element breathe, raw enough to keep the underground roots audible.
