Altered States of America, the latest outburst from grindcore wackos Agoraphobic Nosebleed, boasts no less than 100 songs — count ’em, 100 — crammed onto a 20-minute, three-inch disc. And one of them is a hidden track. Needless to say, speed is of the essence — in the time it takes to read this sentence, you could have listened to three or four tracks. Yet somehow, amazingly, Altered States of America doesn’t come off as the disjointed crapstorm you’d expect. Many if not most of these nano-second bursts of hyperspeed intensity and frenzied brutality dovetail and segue into one another, loosely linking together into a chain of multi-part mini-epics that discuss twisted sex, drug paranoia, the brutality of war and the hypocrisy of religion — while serving as a metaphor for / reflection of our short-attention span society. If brevity is the soul of wit, Agoraphobic Nosebleed are the Oscar Wilde of heavy metal.
