RAVENOUS - Book Of Covetous Souls LP
High Roller Records is releasing "Book of Covetous Souls," the 1991 sole studio album by Austrian thrash metal act Ravenous, in a remastered reissue with four bonus tracks.
The Austrian metal scene of the late 1980s was small and traditionally oriented. "When we started, there really wasn't a thrash band," recalls frontman Jochen, who switched from drums to guitar in 1985 and co-founded Ravenous (named after Voivod's 'Ravenous Medicine'). After expanding to a quartet, Ravenous opened shows for Sodom, Bolt Thrower, and Coroner, who, along with Anthrax, Metallica, and Sepultura, were among their influences.
"Book of Covetous Souls" was produced by Mekong Delta's Ralph Hubert, who was impressed by the band's live performance after seeing their show. The artwork was the first album cover by the now renowned artist Joachim Luetke, while the music would also make its mark internationally: "Since our reunion, people keep telling us how awesome they think the album is," says Jochen. "We've even received positive feedback from Japan, Portugal, and Brazil."
Indeed, Ravenous have been active again since this reunion at the 2014 Kaltenbach Open Air. "After we performed, requests for more shows came right away." While the band works on new material—including tracks originally intended for their second album in the 1990s—the forgotten thrash gem "Book of Covetous Souls" is a great way to pass the time.
