Preorder item, shipping July

This special 35th-anniversary edition of “Mental Funeral” features remastered audio, reworked by Greg Wilkinson at Earhammer Studios.

Autopsy, one of the first American death metal bands, was founded in San Francisco in 1987. Drummer and vocalist Chris Reifert had already made a name for himself with Florida-based genre pioneers Death and through his contribution to their classic debut album “Scream Bloody Gore” before this new, morbid project was launched. Early in their career, Autopsy released four albums on Peaceville Records—starting with the legendary debut “Severed Survival” in 1989—before disbanding in 1995; the members went on to become established figures in the sickodelia scene with Abscess.

After a 15-year hiatus, Autopsy made a triumphant and official return from the grave with the 2010 EP “The Tomb Within.” This was followed in 2011 by the release of the band’s fifth studio album, “Macabre Eternal,” which ushered in a new era of popularity and creativity for the group. This adoration continues to this day, as Autopsy itself approaches its 40th anniversary and still features the long-standing core trio of Chris Reifert, Eric Cutler, and Danny Coralles in its ranks.

“Mental Funeral” was Autopsy’s second studio album, originally released in 1991, and is rightly celebrated as one of the greatest death metal albums of all time—with its unbridled and uncompromising collection of anthems to brutality and depravity, wrapped in a highly distinctive, raw, and organic production.

“Mental Funeral” was recorded in late 1990 at Different Fur Studios under the technical direction of Ron Rigler. The iconic artwork was created by Kev Walker, who had previously designed the (at the time) controversial cover for Autopsy’s debut album, “Severed Survival.”

Ltd. red/green ink-spot vinyl

Peaceville 2026
